Qur’an and Modern Science: Compatible or Incompatible?

By Truth Seeker Staff

The Qur’an, the main source of the Islamic faith, is a book believed by Muslims, to be of completely Divine origin. Muslims also believe that it contains guidance for all mankind. Since the message of the Qur’an is believed to be suitable for all times, it should be relevant to every age. Does the Qur’an pass this test?

The Qur’an appeared in the deserts of Arabia 1400 years ago. At that time, people did not have the same technological advancements that we do today. Many facts about space were unknown. The Qur’an talks about space in great detail. For example, one verse in the Qur’an says, “Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one Unit of Creation) before we clove them asunder?” (Al-Anbiya’ 21: 30)

This verse is describing the Big Bang, that everything was joined together before the Big explosion happened. People 1400 years ago could not have possibly known this, do we not then wonder where this information came from? The Qur’an also foretells the end of the Sun; that it will extinguish after a certain period of time. “And the Sun runs its course for a period determined for it; that is the decree of (Him) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing.” (Ya-Sin 36: 38)

Again I ask, how could people of long ago have known this? What was the source of this knowledge?

There are many other miracles, like how the Qur’an talks about the expanding universe, the water cycle, oceanology, biology, medicine, physiology, and embryology. A lot of the things mentioned in the Qur’an are just being discovered recently, so it is a huge miracle for a book to have been revealed 1400 years ago and contain this information.

In this series of lectures, Dr. Zakir Naik gives an objective analysis of the Muslim belief regarding the Divine origin of the Qur’an, in the light of established scientific discoveries.
