Mary and Jesus in Islam

By A Q Khan

Mary and Jesus in IslamMary-Miriam-Maryam and her son Jesus-Eesa are VIP (Very Important Persons) and have a very special status in Islam compared to any other Faith in this world. They were the descendants of Abraham born into honored families. Miryam (Maidservant of Allah), is the only female character by name mentioned 34 times in the Qur’an and as a title of Chapter-19. Qur’an narrates the details of Maryam from her conception to Youth and Womanhood to delivery of her son – Jesus.

Jesus Eesa (Esau, Yeheshua Jesus-Christ) was a Prophet and Messenger as well. He received One Book called the Injeel / Gospel. He was similar to the Messengers and was a Chosen Man who performed Miracles, who brought the message and preached about the Unity of God. He was the only Prophet raised alive and is mentioned in 29 times (more than Prophet Muhammad who was only mentioned 4 times).

Jesus was the only Prophet titled as Messiah, mentioned with his mother’s name (Eesa-Ibn-Maryam / Jesus-Son of-Mary), talked from the cradle and lifted Alive to come back at the last hour. His birth was miraculous (as that of Adam with no father or mother and of Eve with no mother).

Mary’s father was Imran and her son was Eesa. Both were the descendants of Prophet Abraham thru Isaac. The wives of Imran and Zachariah were sisters. Mary’s Uncle was Zachariah (Yahiya/John the Baptist the son of Zachariah.) Therefore Jesus and John (Yahiya) were cousins.

Honored

The chapters 3 and 19 in Qur’an are titled after the names of Mary’s father and Mary.

Qur’an 3:42 ‘… O Mary! God has chosen you and purified you and again he has chosen you above all women of all nations of the worlds’

Qur’an 5:75 ‘…  His (Jesus) mother (Mary) was a woman of truth.’

Qur’an 21:91 ‘And (remember) her who guarded her chastity: We breathed into her of our spirit and we made her and her son a sign for all peoples.’

Birth of Jesus: was unique, similar to prophet Adam (without Parent) & Eve (without father). The most miraculous was of Prophet Adam (AS) who was created from nothing versus any person need something to create something whether it is living/non-living objects like cloning & artificial insemination for babies).
